Beware of Scammers

In the last few years, I have noticed and uptick in “Roadside Assistance” services. That is not a terrible thing if they are upfront about the “service” they provide. Sadly, as is true with any other type of upheaval we experience, there are folks who will take advantage of us.

We all know the big company that has been around for decades, providing assistance to stranded drivers. They are open about the services they do offer and will tell you or refer somewhere else if what you need is something they don’t provide. Unfortunately, several of the new companies we’ve run into recently are not so open.

In the last year or so, on at least two occasions, I have been contacted by a person to set up a tow and in each case, the individual acted as if they were helping a family member and did not identify themselves as being with an organization or discuss payment. When I arrived at the pick-up location, the vehicle owners informed me that they had just spent $200-$300 with a Roadside Assistance service that told them the tow was covered. Mind you, none of this had been discussed when the individual called to set up the tow. Needless to say, the clients were upset that they had been manipulated. In the first instance, the vehicle owner was able to quickly cancel the payment they made to the “service”. I am not sure what occurred with the other vehicle owner, but I hope they were able to get their money back from the disingenuous “service”.

I believe it’s important for people to be aware. There is nothing wrong with trying to save money, especially in today’s world, but we need to do our own due diligence to make sure that we are not being misled. Research the company you are considering, and make sure they deliver what they offer. It can be a hectic time when you breakdown or get into an accident, and the last thing you need at that moment is to be scammed.

I am always here to answer questions. Call any time. If I don’t answer, I’m probably loading a car and either left my phone in the truck or I can’t answer because my hands are occupied. I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
